Oregon Notary Public Tutorial FAQ's

Q. When I print my Certificate of Education all that prints is my name, education number and the date.
A. Please make sure you set the browser to print background image.
Click "Tools" - "Internet Options" - "Advanced" -- Check "Print background colors and images" (under Printing Section)

Q: How do I change my registration information?
A: When you are logged into the tutorial look to the left of the screen and you will see an 'Edit Profile' link. You can change your name, e-mail address and address.

Q: My commission is still active, so I don’t have to take the class. Do I have to take the test?
A: Yes, all notary applicants must pass the test. Only applicants without a current commission must take the class as well.

Q: My commission just expired, but I just want to renew my commission. Do I have to take a class?
A: Yes, applicants without a current commission, even if they were previously commissioned, must take the class and pass the test.

Q: I did the online tutorial. Can I just take the test that comes with the application?
A: No. In order to receive credit for the class, you must pass the online test as well. Only when you have completed the 3 hour tutorial, and passed the test, will you receive the Certificate of Education and the Notary Education Identification Number. You will be required to list your education number on your application.

Q: If I take the test and tutorial, do I have to take the written test with the application also?
A: No, certificate you get for the on-line course also shows that you passed the test. Only one exam is necessary to be commissioned.

Q: I finished the test. I don’t see my education number. Where is it?
A: The Certificate of Education will be emailed to you within 2 business days of completing the test and the 3 hour tutorial requirement.  The Notary Education Identification number will be on the certificate.

Q: The system kicked me out, but I hadn’t finished my test. Do I have to start over?
A: You have seven days from registration to complete the tutorial. If your session has expired, you will need to start over. If you feel there has been an error, please email us at online.education@state.or.us and we will review your situation and contact you about your options.

Q: I finished my tutorial. Where’s my test?
A: If the test does not appear in the table of contents, it’s because you have not spent enough time in the program. Log back in and review another section. The time logged in is noted at the top of the screen.

Q: My commission is still active. Am I not allowed to take a class?
A: No, you are welcome to take a class. In fact, we highly recommend that all applicants attend a class, either online or in-person.

Q: I put my current commission number in the space provided on the application, but I got it back saying I have to take a class. Why?
A: Your commission must be expired at the time of application. If it is expired, you will have to take a class and pass the test.

Q: I have several questions about the classes. Who should I call?
A: The best way to get a response is to email us at online.education@state.or.us. Someone will get back to you quickly.

Q: What is my Notary Education Number used for?
A: Validation. The Certificate of Education ID Number is placed, by you, on the Application to Become a Notary, to validate for us that you have successfully completed the required training. Please do not confuse this ID Number with your Password or Commission Number.

Q. I took the test that comes with the application. Do I still have to take the test that comes with the tutorial?
A. Yes. In order to provide proof that you have met the education requirement, you must successfully complete the test. After that, we will send your education certificate by email within 2 business days.

Q. Is there a cost for the class?
A. No, all classes are free. The only thing we charge for is the filing fee to be sent with your application.

Q. There are three of us in the office that need to take a class. Can we do the online tutorial together?
A. No. Each individual must be logged in to a computer and complete the process in order to receive credit for receiving the required notary education.
